History & Description

Origin

'Big Guy' is a specific cultivar selected by French nurserymen (notably Vessières) from Ugly seedlings or mutations. It should not be confused with the 'Big Guy' Meyer lemon.

Tree description

It is a tree with harmonious development, vigorous and very productive. It was selected for its increased cold resistance compared with the original Jamaican strain, announced at 16°F (−9°C).

Fruit quality

The fruit is impressive, often weighing between 1.1 and 1.8 lb (500 and 800 g). It accentuates the traits of Ugly: very bumpy, round and massive, with a thick rind recalling citron but easy to detach.

Flavor and ornamental interest

It is a gourmet "monstrosity". The flesh is melting, with a perfect sugar-acid balance and fresh orange-blossom notes. Its giant size makes it a major curiosity in the garden and on the table.
