History & Description
Origin
Melogold is a grapefruit and pummelo hybrid created in 1986 by researchers at the University of California, Riverside, as part of the same breeding program that gave rise to Oro Blanco. It results from a cross between a grapefruit (Citrus paradisi) and an Asian pummelo (Citrus grandis). Its name, a combination of mellow and gold, perfectly evokes the sweetness and the beautiful golden color of this exceptional fruit. Still little known outside the specialized Californian and Israeli markets, Melogold is appreciated by connoisseurs for its unique flavor, noticeably less tart than the classic grapefruit and remarkably free of bitterness. It is grown mainly in Mediterranean regions and mild-winter areas. Its long season, from October to February, makes it a particularly interesting citrus for winter home production.Tree description
Melogold is a medium to large tree, reaching 10 to 16 ft (3 to 5 m), with a spreading, vigorous habit. Its dense, dark green evergreen foliage is characteristic of the large grapefruits. The white, fragrant bloom comes in spring. Growth is vigorous, especially in well-drained soil and in full sun. A sheltered spot is recommended for cold winters below 19°F (−7°C).Fruit quality
Melogold is a large fruit weighing 15.9 to 17.6 oz (450 to 500 g), with smooth, thick, pale yellow skin. The flesh is creamy white to pale yellow, very juicy, without bitterness and with very moderate acidity, which pleasantly sets it apart from the traditional grapefruit. It is practically seedless and peels easily. The harvest runs from October to February, offering a long production season.Flavor and ornamental interest
Melogold is enjoyed as a table fruit or as juice, its unusual sweetness especially appealing to enthusiasts who do not like the bitterness of the classic grapefruit. Its delicate zest, with little bitterness, can be used in sweet cooking and confectionery. Ornamentally, its large golden fruit that stay on the tree for many months create a spectacular effect in gardens. In zone 8b citrus collections, Melogold is an essential specimen for the enthusiast looking for a sweet, bulky alternative to classic citrus.
