Washington Navel orange (Citrus sinensis) × Poncirus trifoliata

Carrizo Citrange

The universal safe bet The Carrizo is the "default all-rounder" rootstock. Reliable, robust and compatible with almost all scions, it served as the foundation of modern citrus growing for decades. It is the risk-free choice for anyone with good garden soil.

Cold hardiness 10°F (−12°C)

Why choose Carrizo Citrange?

Technical analysis

It gives the tree strong vigor and good fruit quality. Its hardiness is very respectable, withstanding temperatures down to 5°F (−15°C). It is generally resistant to Phytophthora and Tristeza, which makes it a historic replacement for the bitter orange in modern orchards.

Point of caution

It is very sensitive to root asphyxiation in clay soil and to salinity. Its limestone tolerance is average (about 8%), which makes it less versatile than the FA5.

Quick comparison

More vigorous than the C35 (the tree takes up more volume).
Hardier than the bitter orange but less so than pure Poncirus.
More versatile than the Citrumelo for classic varieties.

Our conclusion

The Carrizo is the "Vigorous Classic." It is the ideal engine for a large, productive tree in healthy soil, but it lacks the adaptability of newer hybrids such as the FA5.
